Venture Capital for Women Entrepreneurs: A Panel Discussion

Jill Earthy is CEO of Women’s Enterprise Centre, a non-profit organization supporting women entrepreneurs with loans, education, mentorship and advisory services across BC. Jill is passionate about accelerating the advancement of female leaders and entrepreneurs. She was formerly the Head of Female Funders empowering female leaders to invest in early-stage companies, and was Chief Growth Officer of FrontFundr, an online investment platform, bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and investors. She has successfully built two companies nationally and sold them, and then spent 8 years in leadership roles in the non-profit sector supporting entrepreneurs including as CEO of The Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE) and Regional Director of Futurpreneur. She is a community leader and active mentor, currently serving on the national Boards of Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Women Entrepreneur Organizations of Canada (WEOC) and FWE. She is Co-Founder of the WEB Alliance, a collective of over 25 Women’s Business networks in BC and Co-Chairs the annual We for She Conference in Vancouver supporting the economic advancement of women. Jill was recently recognized by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion award as a Community Champion, by Business in Vancouver as an Influential Woman in Business and by WXN as one the Top 100 most powerful women in Canada in 2019.
Bonnie Foley-Wong – Pique Ventures and Head of Investment Strategy, Equality Fund, Presenter:
Bonnie Foley-Wong helps business leaders make tough investment, financial and business decisions. With over 23 years experience of mobilizing capital for entrepreneurial businesses, she has financed over $1 billion dollars of alternative investments in Europe and North America.
Bonnie Foley-Wong is the Head of Investment Strategy at the Equality Fund, stewarding a $300 million investment portfolio with a gender lens. She is also the founder of Pique Ventures, a boutique investment firm investing in a diverse community of leaders building early-stage companies that care, connect, and protect, where she received a Startup Canada Entrepreneur Promotion Award and a YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Entrepreneurship & Innovation in recognition of Pique’s positive impact on the innovation economy and startup community. She is the author of Integrated Investing: Impact Investing with Head, Heart, Body, and Soul and has been published in Business Insider, Next Billion, Inc., Forbes, Huffington Post and Toronto Star. Bonnie previously served on the Board of the Women’s Enterprise Centre of BC, a not-for-profit organization helping women business owners be full contributors to the economy.
Bonnie is a CPA (Ontario), CA, and CFA charterholder. She has a Bachelor of Mathematics and Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo.
Taran Ghatrora – Blume, Panelist:
Taran is a Vancouver based startup founder and Forbes 30 Under 30 and G20 youth delegate for Canada. She co-founded Blume, a venture backed self care company that has raised $4m. Blume exists to bash taboos and stigmas through safe and effective products. Her interests include destigmatizing periods and acne, spirituality, entrepreneurship and psychology. Before founding Blume, Taran practiced law and has carried her health advocacy into the CPG and start up world. She now catalyzes her desire to create impact through Blume’s sustainable, organic products and real talk education. Taran now shapes Blume’s long term vision, strategy and narrative to support the next generation of informed, thriving and confident young womxn.
Genevieve Pinto – Renewal Funds, Presenter:
Genevieve joined the investment team at Renewal Funds in 2017, focusing on investments in consumer products and technology, and supporting transactions across the portfolio. Prior to Renewal, Genevieve was a Partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, with legal expertise in venture capital, M&A and capital markets transactions. Genevieve holds a BA and LL.B from the University of British Columbia and was called to the British Columbia bar in 2006. Genevieve is active in non-profit and community initiatives, including currently serving on the Board of Directors of the BC Women’s Health Foundation and previously serving as a Director for the YWCA Metro Vancouver. Genevieve was a co-founder of the Raise Collective, an organization dedicated to the development and support of women investors and entrepreneurs, and was named to the Women’s Executive Network 2018 Canada’s Top 100 as an Emerging Leader. Genevieve represents Renewal on the Board of Fresh Prep.
In her spare time, Genevieve dreams about actually having spare time, and can usually be found trying to keep up with her young kids and active family and making the most of life on Vancouver’s beautiful North Shore. Genevieve enjoys good food, nice wine and, in the absence of great company, a great book.
